Dragon Baby Hat

I designed this hat in 2012, the year of the Black Dragon, for my little dragon baby born that year. I was originally inspired by Alice Yu's Shur'tugal Socks, which used the Wickerwork stitch pattern.

I have since lost the blog where the design was published, so I figured that it was a good time to rework it now that my dragon baby has lived through his first 12-year cycle of the zodiac.

I had to start from scratch, having no notes from the original design. I changed the yarn weight from DK to Sport, but it can easily accommodate both weights if you keep gauge in mind and adjust as needed. There are also more sizes offered this time and I changed the crown decrease after seeing it done like this on Ravelry (credit to HappyDebs and WineLegs on Ravelry!).

Can you believe that this is the same kid!?

I am not a designer, just a knitter who likes to make things, so please forgive any errors (and feel free to point them out to me!).

Dragon Baby Hat

Size: Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult (12", 14", 16", 18"). The pattern is stretchy, so will fit to around 3" larger than circumference, and it is easily adjusted for other sizes.

Yarn: 90, 130, 170, 215 yards of Sport Weight of your choice. In the samples above, I used Knit Picks Stroll Sport, Sue's Yarns Sport, Knit Picks Hawthorne Sport, and Knit Picks Brava Sport. The hat in the infant photo is DK weight. This pattern works well in both Sport and DK weight yarn, as long as you keep gauge in mind and adjust accordingly.

Gauge: 4" = 28 sts in 2x2 ribbing and 26sts in Wickerwork pattern

Needles: US 5

Wickerwork Stitch

The Wickerwork stitch pattern is a repeat of 8 stitches and 12 rounds. The pattern can end on either round 6 or round 12, making it easy to adjust size.
